The History of the Mattress

  • Today we all have our favorite mattresses to sleep upon.  We’ve picked the correct firmness and the right padding and size.  We have our mattresses on furniture in a bedroom and enjoy sleeping on these soft beds completely designed with our comfort in mind.  But the mattress was not always the highly engineered bastion of comfort we know today.  The mattress of today had very humble beginnings and has grown and evolved just as human civilization has evolved.

    Neolithic beds

Early man has always had some type of bed to sleep on.  It could be a pile of pine needles under a tree or soft sand in the desert.  It’s inherent in the nature of all animals to look for a place to sleep in comfort and early man used what was available in the environment to sleep in piece.

    The first recorded mattress

The first recordings of what could be called a mattress start to appear in 3600 BC.  Historians and archeologists have found records of beds in Persia that were made of goat skins.  These goatskins were made into large bags and then filled with water essentially making the first recorded mattress a water bed.  Other cultures like Egypt made beds by using palm branches and piling them in one spot within a room.    The mattress continued to evolve and there is record of ancient Romans using bags like the Persians but filling them with long-stemmed grasses, wool or even feathers and wool if the owner was wealthy.

    Renaissance bedding and mattresses

The Renaissance period began in the 15th century and continued the evolution of the mattress.  During the Renaissance beds evolved into furniture so that the sleeper was not lying on the floor and then the mattress consisted of hay or straw stuffed into coarse ticks.  Soft bedding made of velvet or silks then covered the ticks to make the mattress more comfortable.  This arrangement is nothing like the mattresses of today and the owner would have to periodically re-stuff the mattress to keep it clean and comfortable.  Wealthier people in this period would again use wool, cotton and even feathers to make a more comfortable mattress for sleeping.

    The mattress is born

The predecessor of today’s mattress first appeared in the 18th century when the mattress changed materials and was made of line and cotton on a frame.  The mattress fillings were primarily all natural fibers like cotton and wool and then the top of the mattress was stitched to allow additional padding to be added to the bed.  The entire mattress was stitched closed and owners no longer needed to periodically re stuff the mattress.

    Along comes the box spring

Beds continued to get more comfortable with the introduction of the box spring.  The box spring absorbed shock from movements and helps make the mattress life longer.  It took off some of the work the mattress had to perform and the combination of mattress and box spring became common for beds in the 19th century.

    And the evolution continues

Mattresses continue to evolve with engineers and scientists constantly developing new techniques to keep people comfortable while they sleep.  Air mattresses were developed that used a type of vulcanized rubber and were comfortable and portable.  Waterbeds became popular as well as large beds like the California king.  As new materials became available designers brought them into the mattress’s repertoire like memory foam.  Memory foam is widely used in a variety of mattress designs and allows for comfortable support while sleeping in a variety of positions.  Mattresses are designed so that two people can sleep comfortably together with extreme shock absorbing capabilities.  There are even adjustable mattresses that allow you to make the mattress more firm or soft depending on your preferences.  These mattresses also have zones so that you and a partner can both have the correct firmness for your body type and sleeping habits.

The mattress has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a pile of dried vegetation.  Now there is science behind the mattress and designers look for new ways every day to make mattresses last longer, absorb more shock, have good airflow and generally put science behind constantly improving the design of a mattress.  Nowadays there’s no reason you should ever have a bad night’s sleep because of your mattress.  It’s time for everyone to throw out the old mattress and go shop for the mattress that is designed to match how you want to sleep, in perfect comfort every night.

Top Seven Tips to Follow When Shopping for Your Next Mattress

The time has come once again for you to purchase another mattress. Whether your old mattress is simply on its last leg and no longer capable of providing the superior level of comfort that you need and deserve or you are simply interested in purchasing a brand new mattress to bring into your home, there are seven great tips that you should follow when shopping for your mattress to make sure that you end up with the best possible deal.

    Set a Strict Budget First

One of the very first things that you need to do even before you start to explore the wide range of mattress models, brands and manufacturers available is set a specific yet strict budget. Keep in mind that the average mattress can range in price from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the size, style, type and quality of the mattress being considered.

Therefore, you need to determine exactly how much money you can afford to put towards your purchase upfront in order to further streamline the list of options. Not only will this make the overall shopping experience much easier to complete successfully, but it will also allow you to ensure that you do not go over your budget – facing the inevitable chaos associated with purchasing a mattress that you simply cannot afford.

Never Shop for a Mattress Alone

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make is to shop for any type of mattress on your own. Having the opinion of one person in regards to such a significant element of your bedroom décor might seem to be enough for the average consumer. However, the exact opposite is actually the case at hand. Whether you are single or married, you need to make sure that this is not a decision that is made alone.

Being married makes this part of the shopping process much easier than you might think simply because you will automatically have a shopping partner that will need to help you determine whether or not you have found the perfect match. You definitely don’t want to purchase a mattress that is pleasant to you but painful to them (or vice versa). Therefore, having a significant other, close friend or even a trustworthy coworker or neighbor will make it much easier for you to narrow down the list of options available and find the mattress that is perfect for you.

Do Not Rush the In-Store Experience

When you arrive to the actual store to explore the options and mattress models available, the last thing that you want to do is rush to make a decision. Unlike when purchasing many other types of products and items to enhance your home décor, purchasing a mattress requires a substantial amount of time and effort – before, during and after the actual mattress has been purchased.

Remember, this is not something that you want to have to replace any time soon – especially within the next one to two years. Therefore, the more time you spend upfront making sure that you are making the best decision, the more time you will be able to spend on the backend enjoying your high-quality mattress.

This is not really something that you can easily fit on your “to-do” list with other menial tasks and errands that you have to run. Purchasing a mattress is definitely something that you want to spend a considerable amount of time doing just to make sure that you get it done right the first time around without any unnecessary complications or delays.

Take the Time to Test the Mattress

It might feel a little awkward at first, especially if you are shopping in a traditional furniture store, but you need to take the time to actually test the mattresses that you are considering even before you think about purchasing them. You more than likely have already seen many people in furniture stores actually laying on the mattresses that are being displayed as models. Even though it may appear a little goofy and immature, this type of activity is actually encouraged by the best salesmen within this particular industry for a number of different reasons.

From a consumer perspective, the consumer is able to get a literal feel for the mattress and have a chance to experience what it would be like to come home to that particular mattress every day and night. From the perspective of the actual business, once a prospective customer has tested the actual product firsthand for themselves, saying “no” to it becomes much more difficult to do than they thought at first.

Do Not Hesitate to Ask Questions

Do not make the mistake of not asking questions to the salespeople that you will be working with throughout this shopping experience. Remember, it is not your job to know everything that there is to know about mattresses – it is theirs! Therefore, you need to make sure that you are allowing them to do their jobs by educating you on the mattresses that you are considering thoroughly. If you have a legitimate question, do not hesitate to ask.

Make sure that you receive the type of answer you were expecting as well, because this type of knowledge will come in handy when it comes to finalizing your purchases. If the salesperson is a little reluctant or is just not willing to provide you with the assistance that you need, you need to keep in mind that there are plenty other stores and businesses that are willing to go the extra mile to make you happy instead.

Shop for Competitive Prices and Promotions

Another step of this process that should always be taken is to shop for competitive prices and promotions that will allow you to save even more money on your mattress. Keep in mind that there are many major brands and manufacturers offering great deals and promotions on their expanding line of mattresses throughout the year – including traditional, brick-and-mortar stores as well as online retailers as well.

Even though it may take a little time and effort to research the current promotions and sales that are available at your favorite brands and retailers, this sacrifice should be considered a solid investment when you think of the value that you will be able to experience once everything is finalized. You might have a very strict budget, but enjoying a substantial sale or promotional offer in addition to the money you have available will make it easier to get more bang for your buck.

Search for Promotional Codes and Coupons

When the average consumer thinks of clipping coupons and receiving promotional codes, he or she might first think about the money that they can save on household products and groceries by doing so. There are even many consumers that enjoy being able to save money on high-end electronics. However, there are not many that actively search for coupons and promotional codes that will allow them to save money when purchasing mattresses and other bedding items. This means that a considerable amount of saving are wasted.

The numbers do not lie. One study shows that the average redemption rate for traditional, printed coupons each year is not even one percent even though billions of dollars in savings are distributed through printed coupons each year, according to Statistic Brain. Take the time to search through your local newspapers, brochures and other types of promotional materials that are distributed directly by the brands, manufacturers and mattress retailers themselves to see if there are any applicable coupons or promotional codes that are just waiting to be used.
